This year we are planting a garden. We have been wanting to do this for several years, but kept putting it off until it was too late in the year. This year. . .no excuses!
Earlier this week, we figured out where we wanted to put the planter box in the backyard and then Katrina and Rebecca put soil into starter containers and then they poked holes with their fingers and planted the seeds for basil, mint, oregano, and strawberries. They should be poking their little green heads out in a week or so.
Today we drove into Fresno to Home Depot and bought the wood to build the planter boxes, some soil and compost and a cherry tomato plant. Katrina had a great time helping put the wood on the cart and then got a ride around the rest of the store.
When we got home Katrina helped to plant the cherry tomato. She dug the hole and patted the soil back over the plant and then watered it. It is fun to see them get so excited about this whole process.
This next weekend we are going to get the planter box put together and get the garden growing! I can't wait to be eating vegetables out of our own garden!!!

Wow!! how fun to already be planting your garden… It’s snowing here right now… no garden just yet… soon… the kids each get their own row and get to pick what they want to plant in it. :) They love it and are very excited to get started when it’s time…. HAVE FUN!!
Way to go with the garden. I try a little bit every year, but do not do a huge amount. My daughter Ashley planted last year for her faith project in young women's. We really enjoyed the fruits of her labor.
Hooray! I know you've been wanting to do this and am so glad you started. It is so rewarding--especially tomatoes in the central valley, they grow so well there. You can grow them clear through October and November sometimes (as long as you plant in a spot that stays sunny that long). Plus, kids love it and it's a great teaching opportunity. May I suggest eggplants for Kevin? Just kidding, but we had great success with zucchini, basil (don't wait until it's really hot), other squashes, and peas (also not good once it's hot). My Dad always does green beans in Bakersfield, and I've seen seeds for that one kind Kevin likes at Grandma's nursery in the Tower District in Fresno. We like you Nehrings!
