Amanda's Harry Potter birthday party!

When the kids arrived they were sorted into their houses by the sorting hat and Professor McGonagall. (She held the sorting hat, and I drew badges out of a bag.) We had Gryffindor, Hufflepuff and Ravenclaw. (The Slytherins were in the Forbidden Forest with Hagrid.) Those three groups went off to their different classes.

We had a Charms class where the kids got a Spell Quiz where they had to match the spell to a description of what it does.
We had Olivander's out in the garage where the kids got to make their own wands. They each got to pick out a "core" for their wand which also provided the "sparks" that come out of a wand when a spell is cast.

Then we all drove over to the cultural hall at the chapel and we played Quidditch. The kids chased after a softball that we called the quaffle and a little yellow bouncy ball that we called the snitch. We didn't end the game just because the snitch was caught, so the scores were pretty high. It was fun, but after a few bumps and bruises, we went back to the house.
We got the cake out that I had decorated just like the one in the first movie that Hagrid brings to Harry. It was fun! We also put the magic re-lighting candles on it, and that was funny! Amanda's eyes just about popped out when those candles re-lit. What!?? She kept trying to blow them out until she was laughing too hard to keep blowing.

Another group went to Defense Against the Dark Arts, where they watched the part in the 3rd Harry Potter movie where Professor Lupin tells the students about boggarts. Boggarts take the shape of whatever you fear the most, and when you say "Riddikulus!" it becomes something funny and you are no longer afraid of it. After they watched the part in the movie, they were each given a paper that said "boggart" on it and they drew something they were most afraid of, and then they were given another paper that said "Riddikulus!" on it and they drew that thing funny so that they weren't afraid of it any more.

When they went home they had goodie bags with them that said "Thanks for visiting Diagon Alley" and they were filled with coloring pages, bookmarks, stickers, a homemade chocolate frog pack with trading cards in it, and a small yelllow bouncy ball that was supposed to be like the snitch. We also put in all the stuff they had made. They all had a great time and we have been resting with our feet up ever since.
I wish there was a spell for cleaning everything up after a party.

The saga ends. . .sniff!
Reading Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows has been a conflicting experience. Both Amanda and I have been reading as fast as we can, as we are excited to find out what happens, yet at the same time, the end means. . .the end.
Early in the afternoon yesterday I read through chapter 35 and then I waited for Amanda, who was on chapter 26 at the time. She read and read, stopping only grudgingly to eat, and, last night at 11:00pm we sat on the couch together and I read the last chapter and Amanda read the epilogue out loud, so we both could finish the book together at the same time. We laughed and cried and gasped and sat on the edge of our seats as we read to the end. The end of the Harry Potter saga. It was great!
Now we prepare for Saturday and Amanda's Harry Potter birthday party!
Three cheers for J.K. Rowling!!!

7/21/07, 00:29
The time stamp on our receipt read 00:29. That is what time it was on Saturday, 21 July 2007, when we finally got our hands on Book 7 - Harry Potter and the Deathly Hollows!
8:30am on Friday the girls and I went and stood in line outside Borders Books, and when they opened at 9:00am, we inched forward until we got inside and got wristband #121!
During the day we did a few last minute preparations, and then at 10:00pm I got Amanda and Rebecca up, we got into our costumes, and, wands at the ready, we drove back to Borders Books. Amanda and Rebecca were dressed as students from Gryffindor House and I was dressed as Professor Trelawny. We got there too late for the costume contest (which several people said I would have won), but we did get to be on tv. Several of us stood behind a hispanic newscaster and waved and said "Univision!" for the 11:00 news broadcast on Channel 21 Univision (the local Spanish station).
There wasn't a whole lot else to do, so we wandered about the store, taking pictures of great costumes, and getting our pictures taken as well, and then it was finally time. At midnight, everyone counted down, and then we were called up to the line in groups. I asked Amanda what she was going to be doing in the van on the way home, and she said, "probably sleeping." I said, "Uh uh, you are going to be reading out loud!"
So, at 12:29 on Saturday morning, we got our book. Thankfully there were no evil Voldemort followers shouting spoilers out in the parking lot, so we are still going to find out what happens to Harry Potter the old fashioned way! Amanda is on chapter seven, and I got my copy from Amazon today in the mail, and I am on chapter three. I have to go now, I've got to catch up!

Katrina's turning 2! Wow! It's time for a luau!

We had hawaiian pizza and yummy maui zaui pizza from Round Table, and TONS of fruit! It was all really good! We had cupcakes with hibiscus flowers on them and they were set out in the shape of a lei. When we were decorating, we put up a sign that said "It's A Luau!" Katrina referred to the sign there after as "my letters". The kids had luau coloring pages and there were also foam visors for each of them and they each got to put foam letter stickers on for their names and there were also foam hawaiian flower and leaf stickers to decorate them as well. They all looked cute!
We gave Katrina her own bike helmet for her birthday, as she is always trying to wear her sisters' helmets. She pulled out the box and squeeled, "My helmet!" We put it on her and she didn't take it off for nearly the whole rest of the party.
Aloha!

Anchorage to Kerman

When we arrived at Seattle, Katrina was as thrilled as ever to see her stroller waiting for her in the jetway. Each time we have landed somewhere, she has walked off the plane and then jumped up and down, pointing, "My stroller! My stroller!". This leg of the trip she was much more brave about taking that step from the jetway to the plane and visa versa. She is getting to be a pro at this flying thing!

In Seattle we had to go out on the tarmac to board the plane, so this was a little different than before, but the girls did very well. Katrina got in her seat, looked out the window and squealed, "Momma! My stroller!" She could still see it sitting at the bottom of the ramp before they loaded it into the belly of the plane.

The girls were thrilled to see the van again and they talked excitedly most of the way home, telling their dad all the fun things they did and had seen. They will have enough stories for quite a while!

Last Post from Alaska

What we are not looking forward to is the doubling of the temprature between here and California. We have been watching the heat wave build and we are not looking forward to plunging from 65 degrees to 110 degrees (Detail) in a course of eight hours! Yikes!

Tonight for dinner we went to the Lucky Wishbone, a really great family-owned restaurant here in Anchorage. It was one of my favorite places when I was in high school, and I always try to go there when I come to Anchorage. It was so good, and I got to have my pineapple shake! Yum!
Tomorrow we are home! We are hoping for as smooth a flight on the way home as we had up here!

Happy Fourth of July!!!

Today was a lot of fun! We started the day off with our own little private pancake breakfast, rather than head downtown in the rain for the one that the city was hosting.

After the last parade float had gone by, they were headed toward the Parkstrip, where the food was, so we followed and unofficially became a part of the parade. We had hot dogs, gyros and a funnel cake. Then it started to rain.
We left there and I took the girls to the Alaska Railroad Station. While we were there, Kevin called. We talked for a little bit, and then we got on the subject of benchmarks, and Kevin went looking on line for where we were on an online map. Not only were there three Tidal Benchmarks on the Railroad Building, but there was also a Geocache nearby. I didn't have the GPS, so Kevin read me the cache page, and I was able to locate it. Neat! (Read our Geocache Log here.)

As we drove, I decided that I was going to give a cache I had tried twice before another shot. I had figured out what the cache was on the first try, but I had had no luck getting it out. This time it was backwards, so I knew I was looking for the right thing and grabbed it. Don't twist. . .PULL! Anyway, I called Kevin from the car and told him I had found another cache. He was surprised, but thought it was great!
Every Fourth of July, we spend time together as a family geocaching. So, it was really wonderful that we got to geocache together, even if we were over 2000 miles apart.
When we got home we had baby back ribs (I have a great recipie for when I get home) for dinner and s'mores for desert. (Katrina - "Mama, my sticky!") We did some sparklers on the back porch and then we headed out to see the fireworks. The fireworks show began at 11:35pm and even when it ended the sun had not gone down. It was a fun day!

Museum and the front lawn

This morning the Rock Gods showed back up to continue working on the front lawn. Today they started to dig up all the top few inches of dirt at the front of the lawn. This also meant a lot of roots. They used the digger and pulled most of them out, cleared the area and then brought in the topsoil.

It is nice to have the girls old enough to begin to understand and relate to some of the things that they are seeing in the museum. Amanda got very excited when she saw all the things about the gold rush and began to tell us all about the things that we were seeing and what they were used for. Rebecca asked a lot of questions about what things were and what they were made of.
We went downstairs and looked at the paintings and then looked at the new exhibit which was contemporary art by native americans. Then we went into the Children's Gallery and the girls had a lot of fun playing in there. Katrina was well past her nap and was on the verge of a meltdown, so we left.
By the time we got home, the Rock Gods had filled in top soil, rocks, mulch and had completely cleared all the dirt and roots from where the sod was going to go at the front of the lawn.
Later in the afternoon, Jordan brought Isabel and Ivy back over and we had a little tea party under the fairy bower on the back porch. They had mini Oreos and apple juice "tea", and then we had the banana ice cream. That was absolutely delicious! Yum!
The Rock Gods will be back on Thursday to plant all the flowers, ferns, etc. The front yard looks really great already! It is going to be amazing!

The Rock Gods

The trail runs along the railroad tracks, so we even got to see an Alaska Railroad train go by! Very cool!
Later in the afternoon we went back over to Jordan and Sioux-z's house so that the kids could play together for a while longer. When we got back home, we had soup for dinner with the bread that the girls had made! It was great.

I think tomorrow we are off to the Anchorage Museum.
